This is a Rare & Original Vintage Collaborative Painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) & Dominique Philbert (1967-2011) known as ERO (Ever Rocking On). Titled Untitled King Midas Dated Circa 1986, This is a Mixed Media masterpiece that has remained in a private collection since its creation, unseen by the public for nearly four decades. The work was executed in acrylic, oil stick, Metallic Gold & Silver, and layered Mixed Media Collage on Wood and Canvas, with 2 Distinct Signatures on the reverse: ERO’s signature Dominique Philbert & Basquiat’s “JMB” initials signature variant, each in a different Color & Hand.
The work is inspired by the legend of King Midas, whose golden touch brought both fortune and ruin. This allegory of greed, power, and consequence aligns with Basquiat’s celebrated King motif. ERO’s raw energy and street influence blend with Basquiat’s intellectual depth, creating a rare Dual Signed Work that bridges mythology and modernity into a work of art.
Basquiat and ERO were close friends and collaborators in 1980s New York Art Scene, where graffiti, hip-hop, and fine art converged. In 1984, Jean-Michel immortalized his friend by painting a Double Portrait tribute Titled “ERO,” that reflects both their friendship and shared artistic roots. Basquiat was an outsider and rebel, as a Self-Taught Artist he challenged the traditional art world — and today his work continues to inspire artists and collectors worldwide. The Basquiat Estate stopped authenticating works in 2012 which is remarkable considering he was born in 1960 and this generation of artists and collectors are very much alive. With ongoing advancements in technology and research, it is possible that this work could be formally authenticated in the future, creating potential for significant appreciation in value.
This dual signed painting carries direct attribution by Basquiat’s close friend and collaborator ERO, with both artists’ signatures visible on the back. As shown in the photos and video, the 2 distinct signatures in different colors. One by Dominique Philbert, ERO. The other, JMB — one of Basquiat’s recognized signature variants. Basquiat’s work remains among the most important and expensive in the modern era. Institutions were initially slow to embrace his work which is why some of his most prolific pieces are still in private hands. Today, his legacy dominates museum walls, auction records, and art history itself. By the early 1980s, young artists associated with graffiti entered the exclusionary art world, giving rise to the insurgent movement in American art. Jean-Michel Basquiat became an icon of this movement, alongside his peers, friends, and sometimes collaborators ERO, A-One, Fab 5 Freddy, Futura, Keith Haring, Kool Koor, LA2, Lady Pink, Lee Quiñones, Zephyr, Rammellzee, Toxic & Others.
Dominique Philbert, known as ERO (Ever Rocking On), was one of the youngest members of the historic graffiti movement in New York City during the 1980s . His politically charged, text-based works helped bring street aesthetics into galleries, and he exhibited internationally throughout the decade. In 1984, his work was featured alongside Basquiat and Keith Haring in Arte di Frontiera: New York Graffiti in Rome. Decades later, his importance was reaffirmed when the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston featured his work in the landmark exhibition “Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip Hop Generation”. ERO is celebrated as one of the key artists who helped graffiti emerge from the streets into museums worldwide.
This art movement is still being studied, written about, and debated as one of the most important developments of the late 20th and early 21st century. When scholars look back to the 1980s, they often point to this period as the moment when graffiti and street art made the leap into the fine art world. The decade is frequently described as the “Birth of Street Art as an Art Movement,” and to this day historians and museums continue to publish, analyze, and expand on its lasting impact.
Into the 21st century, both Basquiat and ERO continue to Inspire Collectors & Artists Worldwide, proving their influence is as alive today as it was in 1980s New York.
Their work has been exhibited in Museums & Galleries throughout the World & Are held in Corporate & Private Collections. The painting itself has some craquelure due to its natural age and the various mixed media that was used from the Time Period. This came from a Private Estate Collection which makes it very Rare due to its Size, Age & Beauty. Please keep in mind this is All Original and may have some minor wear and imperfections consistent with its age. Overall its in Great Condition and All shown in the photos and video.
